Bridge Work to Begin on West Adams St in Syracuse

Deck Replacement Part of NY Works Program NYSDOT Will Provide Updates on 511NY

ALBANY, NY (06/22/2012)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced that work will begin on Monday, June 25, to replace the bridge deck carrying West Adams Street (State Route 930C) over Onondaga Creek, in the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County. This is the first bridge in the Syracuse area to begin construction through Governor Cuomo's NY Works initiative.

"Governor Cuomo's NY Works program speeds up our bridge and highway reconstruction efforts and puts people back to work," Commissioner McDonald said "The traveling public will see nearly twice as much highway work than just last year. We ask motorists to be patient and drive carefully through construction zones."

Traffic and travel information on this and other NYSDOT projects is available by calling 511 or by visiting www.511NY.org before leaving home.

This project will consist of replacing the bridge deck using cast-in-place construction, requiring a three month closure of West Adams Street between West Onondaga and South Salina Streets. The one-span bridge will be closed to all traffic beginning on Monday. A short, signed detour will direct motorists and pedestrians to use West Onondaga Street and South Salina Street to bypass the work location. The bridge is scheduled to re-open in late September.

This work is part of a $17.4 million NY Works project to improve bridge conditions on 13 structures in the Syracuse and Utica areas. NY Works focuses on improving pavement that is in fair condition and bringing it to good condition. This preventive maintenance work will better preserve the state's infrastructure and guard against the need for more costly, in-depth construction. Bundling projects sites within close geographic locations into a single contract enables DOT to lower expenses and obtain lower bids.

The contractor for this project is Slate Hill Constructors, located in Warners, Onondaga County.
