HOUGHTON, MI (05/03/2012)(readMedia)-- Six members of Michigan Tech's student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) were at Burton Middle School in Grand Rapids Friday, to make presentations about engineering education and careers to approximately 500 sixth through eighth graders. After school, they met with Hispanic high school students to discuss college options and possible majors and careers.
Included among them was Michael Briseno, a biomedical engineering major from Harrisville.
Uziel Mendez, a biomedical engineering major, is the coordinator of the SHPE chapter outreach project. Mendez participated in a Family Engineering workshop held by Tau Beta Pi during the spring semester. Most of the SHPE students have presented at Family Science & Engineering Nights during the past school year.
Michigan Tech SHPE students presenting in Grand Rapids also included: Gilbert Ramirez, marketing; Sherry Sotelo-Roman, chemical engineering; Kaile Cota, biology; and Armando Flores, scientific and technical communication.
