Bronx Residents, Advocates, Electeds to Celebrate Victory Against Cross Bronx Expansion, But Work Isn't Over

After Gov. Hochul and NYSDOT canceled proposals that would have built a new polluting roadway, advocates will celebrate hard-fought win and share next steps in the campaign to equitably rebuild the Cross Bronx over Starlight Park and the Bronx River

BRONX, NY (10/13/2025) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, Comptroller Brad Lander, Assemblymembers Amanda Séptimo, Karines Reyes, and Council Majority Leader Amanda Farías will join the Stop the Cross Bronx Expansion Coalition for a zoom press conference to celebrate their victory. Coalition members will preview what's next in how the State rebuilds the Cross Bronx Expressway over the Bronx River and Starlight Park.

Last Thursday, the New York State Department of Transportation announced its decision to scrap plans to build a new traffic diversion structure for the Cross Bronx Expressway, in response to widespread community opposition to the project. The traffic diversion structure would have increased toxic emissions and pollution for nearly 64,000 residents living along the sited project area, already burdened by one of the nation's most congested highways.

The group will celebrate their victory, emphasize their continued fight against widening the Cross Bronx, and share their vision for a just, sustainable rebuilding of the 5 bridges of the Cross Bronx Expressway next to vulnerable communities and over sensitive ecosystems.
