Bronx native wins Fulbright Award to teach in Portugal

BELOIT, WI (05/16/2013)(readMedia)-- Bronx native Anthony Otey who graduated this month from Beloit College has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Otey, a comparative literature major and philosophy minor, will teach English and American Studies at the Instituto Politécnico de Leiria in Portugal. In addition to teaching, Otey will be using his Fulbright Fellowship to teach literacy to youth and to learn more about Lusophone culture and history.

Once he completes his teaching assignment in Portugal, Otey will attend Dartmouth College to receive his master's degree in comparative literature.

Otey will be one of more than 1,700 U.S. citizens traveling abroad during the 2013-14 academic year as part of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Sponsored by the U.S. government, the Fulbright program is meant to foster intercultural understanding and operates in 155 countries worldwide.

Beloit College is a residential, liberal arts college offering 40 majors to its 1,250 students. Located 90 miles northwest of Chicago, Beloit is one of the nation's most international colleges, drawing students from 41 nations as well as 49 states.
