CAT Race Offers $500 Purse to Fastest Racers

Inaugural Adventure Triathlon Set In Western Catskills

DELHI, NY (04/21/2011)(readMedia)-- The Western edge of the Catskill Park is home to two of New York City's largest reservoirs in their watershed system - the Pepacton and Cannonsville. These water bodies have only been open for fishing until two years ago. In 2009, the NYC DEP opened the Cannosville for recreational boating (non-motorized) for a three year pilot program. Results have been great as paddlers and sailors venture out on the pristine waters and enjoy the natural and unspoiled beauty.

With the announcement of a triathlon on the Cannonsville by the NYC DEP back in March, it seems that recreation on the reservoirs is something that is here to stay. The town of Hancock, NY is hosting the first Cannonsville Adventure Triathlon (CAT Race) on June 5th. While racers will have to be in Hancock the day before the race to ensure their boats are permitted and steam cleaned per NYC DEP rules, the village is rolling out the red carpet to racers and their friends and family to make sure the weekend stay is a fun one. Chris Gross, from the Hancock Partners, is looking forward to a great day in the village. "Our businesses are excited to host a unique event for our area. While Hancock is widely known for our excellent fishing rivers and the reservoirs, there are so many recreational activities that we excel at experiencing here."

After the race there will be an awards ceremony and BBQ party with the street in front of the Hancock House Hotel blocked off. The CAT Race organizers just announced a $500 purse for the three top categories – fastest man, woman, and team. First time race organizers have learned just how popular triathlons and adventure racing is. Race calendars are full with events many of which sell out. "As a first time event, we were a little nervous about competing events, but have found out that many have already sold out. " stated Mary Beth Silano, executive director of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce. "Our purse will set us apart from other events and hopefully draw a great crowd for this inaugural race."

The CAT Race blog (http://cannonsvilletriathlon.blogspot.com) is posting updates to the race that you can subscribe to and stay in touch with new details and activities associated with the event. There are links to online registration as well as a link to apply for a free NYC DEP Access Permit.
