CMSV student Mahabir Samuel Presents Original Research at Student Research & Service Symposium May 17, 2012

RIVERDALE, NY (05/04/2012)(readMedia)-- College of Mount Saint Vincent student Mahabir Samuel will present his original undergraduate research at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Student Research and Service Symposium at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 17th in Smith Hall, Founders Hall, on the College's Riverdale campus.

Mr. Samuel, a senior Sociology major from Bronx, New York, conducted original research based on content analysis of hip-hop lyrics. He analyzed the phenomenon of "education is acting white" in some minority communities. His findings suggest that rather than being an anti-intellectual attitude, it is a critical response to real and perceived failings of the American education system. He further distinguishes between three distinct views of education in the African American community.

Mr. Samuel, a senior Sociology major from Bronx, N.Y, will present his research at the workshop entitled "Applying Sociology: Mentoring Undergraduate Student Research" at the Eastern Sociological Society on February 25, 2012 in New York City.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent Student Research and Service Symposium is held to recognize students who have engaged in significant research and service initiatives, as well as the faculty and staff who serve as their mentors. Students will have the opportunity to present and highlight their recent research and service accomplishments to the campus community along with College benefactors, peers, parents, and local guidance counselors and principals.
