CMSV student Michelle Thompson Presents Research at Student Research & Service Symposium May 17, 2012
RIVERDALE, NY (05/04/2012)(readMedia)-- College of Mount Saint Vincent student Michelle Thompson will present her original undergraduate research, "The Internationalization of the LGBT Community," at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Student Research and Service Symposium at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 17th in Smith Hall, Founders Hall, on the College's Riverdale campus.
Ms. Thompson undertook a content analysis of the blogosphere regarding the controversy surrounding the implementation of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Her findings suggest that the LGBT community has internationalized, and the ethnic face of the movement has changed. The cyber-community built around this very American issue is a striking example of the international reach of American domestic politics, she contends. Ms. Thompson will be enlisting in the United States Navy after graduation.
Ms. Thompson, a senior sociology major and philosophy minor from Mt. Vernon, N.Y., will present her research at the National Association for Ethnic Studies in a panel entitled Global Social Media, Ethnicity, and Civil Rights in New Orleans, La. on April 6th, 2012.
The College of Mount Saint Vincent Student Research and Service Symposium is held to recognize students who have engaged in significant research and service initiatives, as well as the faculty and staff who serve as their mentors. Students will have the opportunity to present and highlight their recent research and service accomplishments to the campus community along with College benefactors, peers, parents, and local guidance counselors and principals.
