CMSV students Julianne Gomes and Krystal Gonzalez Present at Student Research & Service Symposium May 7, 2012

RIVERDALE, NY (04/27/2012)(readMedia)-- College of Mount Saint Vincent seniors Julianne Gomes and Kristal R. Gonzalez will present their Honors Theses at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Student Research and Service Symposium at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 17th in Smith Hall, Founders Hall, on the College's Riverdale campus. Ms. Gomes' thesis is entitled "Information Technology and its Implication Nursing," and Ms. Gonzalez's thesis is entitled "Factors that Influence Breastfeeding."

In "Information Technology and its Implication Nursing," Ms. Gomes, a nursing major from Yonkers, N.Y., conducted a comprehensive literature review to analyze and evaluate both the positive and potential negative implications on the use of information technology in health care. Ms. Gomes demonstrated the ability to select and organize credible evidence to support how information technology, if used appropriately, improves nurses' time management and reduces medication errors.

In "Factors that Influence Breastfeeding," Ms. Gonzalez, a nursing and biology minor from Washingtonville, N.Y., conducted a scholarly review of the evidence to identify key factors associated with a mother's decision to breastfeed. Ms. Gonzalez's review demonstrates how culture/ethnicity, acculturation, social support and education influence a mother's decision to initiate and continue breastfeeding her infant.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent Student Research and Service Symposium is held to recognize students who have engaged in significant research and service initiatives, as well as the faculty and staff who serve as their mentors. Students will have the opportunity to present and highlight their recent research and service accomplishments to the campus community along with College benefactors, peers, parents, and local guidance counselors and principals.
