POTSDAM, NY (09/24/2010)(readMedia)-- Community Performance Series is pleased to present The Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia's productions of Leo Lionni's "Frederick," "Swimmy," and "Inch By Inch," as part of the Meet The Arts series.

Performances will be at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater, located on the SUNY Potsdam campus. Please note a time change from a previously scheduled 7 p.m. performance.

Based on Leo Lionni's Caldecott Honor children's books, the Mermaid Theatre brings to life the beloved stories through innovative puppetry styles and visual lighting designs, as well as an original musical score. Swimmy is a tiny insignificant fish in the vast ocean who uses ingenuity to fend off danger. Frederick, a mouse who is a poet from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail, makes everyday life an artful experience. The story of "Inch by Inch" features a lovable inchworm who is very proud of his facility for measuring absolutely everything, including a robin's tail, a flamingo's neck, a toucan's beak, a heron's legs and a nightingale's song.

"We are thrilled to be able to expose our students to a live performance at a great price and location," said Meg Lapinski, a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at Colton-Pierrepont Central School. "The students will be in awe to see their favorite children's books come alive on stage, many for the first time."

The Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia was founded in 1972 and is based out of Windsor, Nova Scotia. Drawing from the literature of children's books, the theatre company has played an important role in the development of puppetry art in Canada and around the world. The Mermaid Theatre has received widespread recognition for its important ambassadorial role in youth theatre, including an award for best performing group from the Canadian Arts Presenting Association and the Crystal Tourism Ambassador Award from Nova Scotia's tourism industry leaders.

Tickets can be purchased by visiting the CPS Box Office, located in the lobby of Snell Theater, and at Northern Music & Video in downtown Potsdam.
