Camp Invention Comes Back to SUNY Canton

CANTON, NY (07/10/2017) SUNY Canton will be hosting the popular Camp Invention summer science, technology, engineering and math immersion program beginning during the third week of July. Space is still available on a limited basis for elementary school-age students.

The program runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for two sessions during the weeks of July 17 to 21 and July 24 to 28 in the college's Richard W. Miller Campus Center.

"Students who enjoy science, math and engineering are more likely to find career success throughout their lives," said Camp Invention Director Rhonda Rodriguez. "Camp Invention helps today's youth see that science is not just a textbook, that math is not just a question to answer on a state test. Science is messy. It's about asking questions and digging for the answers."

During the first session, titled Launch, students in grades K-6 will learn critical STEM skills through hands-on experiments, teamwork and games, including:

  • Duct Tape Millionaire, where students can unleash their inner entrepreneurs by creating a new invention from Duct Tape, developing a business plan and marketing their product.
  • Have a Blast will allow students to build bubble blasters, air cannons and water rockets.
  • Mission Space Makers will challenge students to work together to make a new planet safe for habitation.
  • Operation Keep Out will task campers to transform an everyday household gadget into a secret alarm box to guard their treasures.

During the July 24-28 week of camp, students will delve into environmental challenges during the CREATE session, including:

  • Problem Solving on Planet ZAK, where students will find themselves stranded on a strange planet and will have to rebuild their spaceship, find shelter, clothing and food.
  • In Saving Sludge City, campers will attempt to bring back a city ruined by pollution and find ways to make it safe.
  • During Imagination Point, students will learn the laws of motion by creating their own amusement park ride.
  • Maker Studio will demonstrate 3-D printing, circuits and general invention.

All camp instructors are all certified classroom teachers. Tuition for each week is $225. Parents can register by visiting the website at www.campinvention.org or calling the toll-free registration line at 800-968-4332.

Camp Invention is a national program presented by the National Inventors Hall of Fame, with a mission of honoring inventors, inspiring creativity and challenging the next generation. SUNY Canton Associate Professor Ronald Tavernier discovered Camp Invention and helped bring it to the college in 2011.
