Carthage Biology students Lily Kaestner and Jeffrey White, along with Neuroscience student Lin Sensenbrenner, presented their research conducted in the Biology Department at the Wisconsin Science Education and Research Consortium Conference, held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on November 14-15.
Lily and Jeffrey presented their poster titled "Finding Fongie's Pham: Annotation of a C1 Cluster Bacteriophage". Their work involved studying the genome of a novel bacteriophage isolated by Carthage students in an introductory biology course. This work is conducted in collaboration with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute through the SEA-PHAGES program.
Lin presented a poster titled "CAZyme presence in novel hindgut bacterium Rikenellaceae Isolate 38". Lin's work focuses on analyzing the genome of a newly identified species of bacteria found in the hindgut of the herbivorous fish Kyphosus sydneyanus. This work is in collaboration with researchers from Cornell University, Auckland University of Technology, and the University of Auckland.
