Chevy Packs More Power into Its Malibu

Automaker's Midsize Sedan Surpasses Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry in Horsepower

BRUNSWICK, MAINE (03/19/2012)(readMedia)-- When the redesigned 2013 Chevy Malibu arrives at Chevrolet dealerships later this year, it will shed its V6 option in favor of an all four-cylinder lineup, but that won't stop it from becoming more powerful. The new Malibu's standard 2.5-liter Ecotec engine will be one of the most powerful naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines in the midsize segment. Meanwhile, a performance-focused Ectotec 2.0-liter turbocharged unit will offer more horsepower and torque than the V6 it replaces.

Using direct-injection technology to deliver 197 horsepower, the 2013 Malibu's 2.5-liter Ecotec will produce 19 more horsepower than the 2012 Toyota Camry's inline-four and 27 more horses than the 2013 Ford Fusion's four-cylinder. Available this summer, the new standard engine in the Chevy Malibu will also offer 191 pound-feet of torque, the most of any naturally aspirated four-cylinder in its class.

"The powertrain changes to the Malibu are a win-win for customers; they not only offer more power, but increase fuel efficiency as well thanks to direct-injection technology," said Jeanette Downing, general manager of Maine Chevy dealership Goodwin Chevrolet Brunswick. "Both new engines will offer enough kick to stand out from middle-of-the-road midsizers, but the turbo unit will be a true rarity in the class when it comes to performance."

Due at Chevy dealerships this fall, the turbocharged Ecotec model of the Malibu will output 259 horsepower, seven more than the larger, outgoing V6. Combined with 260 pound-feet of torque available at a low 1,700 rpm, that power can propel the 2013 Malibu from 0 - 60 mph in 6.3 seconds.

For those more interested in reducing the effect of high gas prices, Chevrolet's most fuel-efficient midsize car ever, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, is already on sale with a 37-mpg highway rating. Employing Chevy's eAssist light-hybrid system, the Malibu Eco uses regenerative braking to recharge its own battery and provide a boost to its 2.4-liter Ecotec engine in certain conditions. Despite its high fuel efficiency, the Malibu Eco still muscles out 182 horsepower, giving it an advantage in the performance department over full hybrids.

Sales of the Chevy Malibu were up 4.7 percent in February compared to the same month year, helping Chevrolet boost its overall sales by 5.8 percent. The automaker enjoyed its largest sales leap from the Volt electric car, which was up 264.1 percent from its February 2011 sales numbers after moving 1,023 units last month. Chevy's larger vehicles also pulled more than their share in February, with the Chevy Suburban SUV and Chevy Colorado truck posting sales gains of 38.6 percent and 35.5 percent, respectively.

"The fact that so many of Chevy's models are seeing sales increases is a testament to the quality and reputation of their vehicles," added Downing. "Whether a midsize sedan like the Malibu is right for you or you're more in the market for a pickup, Chevy is finding the right mix of performance and fuel efficiency in every class it competes in."
