Chicago native Gus Graves to join Teach for America
BELOIT, WI (02/07/2012)(readMedia)-- A Chicago native and Beloit College senior already has post-graduation plans in place.
Gus Graves, a graduate of Francis W Parker, will be joining Teach for America, a non-profit organization that recruits recent college graduates to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools. The literary studies major will be teaching in Hawaii.
"Gus joins a long line of Beloit College students selected from a very competitive pool into Teach for America. Many Beloiters have gone on to help select, train and recruit for TFA," said Carol Wickersham, the college's director for community-based learning.
"They embody the college mission of leading 'fulfilling lives marked by high achievement, personal responsibility and public contribution in a diverse society.' It doesn't get much better than that," she continued.
Students selected for Teach for America possess strong leadership potential and the other strengths demonstrated by the most successful teachers in the program, according to Sarah Troyer, the manager of regional and underclassmen recruitment from the organization's Chicago division.
