Background: The Respiratory Care Program at Genesee Community College is pleased to welcome Dr. Yang Liu to GCC's Batavia campus on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dr. Liu is an intensive care physician from Shanghai, China. He is one of four 2014 International Fellows selected by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). He will spend three weeks in the United States, visiting both Rochester, NY and Rochester, MN before attending the AARC's annual Congress in Las Vegas, NV December 9-12, 2014.

"The international fellows program helps to bridge the gap so other countries that may not have respiratory therapy programs can learn what we do to train and educate," said Josh Escudero, director of the Respiratory Care program at GCC. Dr. Liu will visit Rochester General Hospital, which is a clinical affiliate of GCC, before coming to the College.

Escudero plans a demonstration for Dr. Liu in GCC's Respiratory Care Program lab (Room A323) at 12:45 p.m. "We are going to have several of our second-year RCP students working on a clinical simulation," Escudero said. "We want to demonstrate how we have incorporated cutting-edge technology and simulations into our program."

The AARC International Fellows program began in 1990. Over the years health professionals from 43 countries have visited the United States, exchanging experience and knowledge. China, at this point, does not have respiratory therapists. "People like Dr. Liu may be instrumental in bringing the profession there in the future," Escudero said. "We would be proud if they chose to model their RT programs after ours."
