CAZENOVIA, NY (11/16/2010)(readMedia)-- Three Cazenovia College students have received recognition for their greeting card designs submitted to The Gallery Collection's fourth annual Create-a-Greeting Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest. All three are students in the College's Visual Communications Program. Three finalists are chosen each month from April through mid-January.

One of the September finalists was Rachel Herman, of Cicero, N.Y., a sophomore at Cazenovia College. She found out about the contest in her illustration class, where it was assigned as a project. Herman says, "There was a list of holidays we could design for, but I ultimately decided to create a birthday card. The idea for my design came from my love of cake decorating shows, and I am very happy with the end result. I think it is very exciting that we have three finalists from Cazenovia College so far; each card is definitely unique and deserving of being a finalist." (Image: HermanRachel BirthdayCard)

Elise Russell of Whitesboro, N.Y., a sophomore at Cazenovia College, was one of the October finalists. She was assigned to create a design for the contest by the instructor of her illustration class, who encouraged each student to enter the contest after the assignment was finished. Russell says, "I thought that the competition was a good change of pace to the traditional essay-style scholarship applications that are usually offered." (Image: RussellElise Christmas card)

Russell notes that having three finalists so far from Cazenovia College says something about the visual communications program at Cazenovia. "There is also a great deal of competition between the students," Russell says. "We tend to push each other to experiment with new things. There is also a great deal of support, and I do benefit from that."

The students agree that their instructor, Associate Lecturer Jim Owens, plays a role in their success. Russell says, "He comes up with new and interesting projects that force us to try new things, and experiment with new techniques."

Another October finalist was Nicholas Vernetti of Webster, N.Y., a junior at Cazenovia College. He says, "For the competition, I chose to do a birthday card, and experimented with painting in Photoshop for my illustration. I did not seriously think that I would be a winner, but it was a very nice surprise to say the least. The contest is another enriching experience that furthers my graphic design experience while in the Visual Communications Program here at Cazenovia." (Image: VernettiNicholas - Birthday Card)

The monthly winners are posted at www.gallerycollection.com/greeting-cards-monthly-finalists4.htm.

The Gallery Collection, a Web based greeting card company, created the opportunity for students currently enrolled in high school, college or a university the opportunity to win a cash award by designing a greeting card. The winning entry will be produced and sold in The Gallery Collection's product line. Each finalist receives a $75 Amazon gift card. All entries are eligible to win the scholarship.
