NYS BOE to hold certification hearing for bad new voting machines

NEW YORK, NY (01/13/2020) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, Common Cause/NY and advocates will rally ahead of a meeting at the New York State Board of Elections (NYSBOE) where ES&S, a voting machine company, will host a public test of their ExpressVote XL machines. ExpressVote XL is a touch screen voting machine that would allow voters to mark their ballot electronically instead of on the traditional voter-marked paper ballots. Cybersecurity election experts almost universally pan the touch screen technology, so much so that most states have switched back to voter-marked paper ballots.

The ExpressVote XL is:

  • Vulnerable to cyber attacks and hardware malfunctions
  • Prone to undercounting votes
  • Expensive, costing roughly $8,250 per unit
  • Major accessibility flaws
