NEW YORK, NY (04/07/2014)(readMedia)-- In response to statements by Comptroller Tom DiNapoli as reported in today's New York Times, http://t.co/TETwZx5ixs, that he will opt out of the one-office one-year public financing system that was passed in the 2014 New York State budget, Common Cause/NY Executive Director, Susan Lerner, released the following statement:
"Comptroller DiNapoli has made the only rational and responsible choice by refusing to participate in the mock public financing pilot approved by the Legislature. The program is designed to provide political cover for Albany's failure to enact real reform, and is so poorly conceived that it is doomed to fail. Common Cause/NY and other good government advocates do not want to see taxpayer resources wasted on a sham. We commend Comptroller DiNapoli for recognizing the hostility to change and cynicism behind this gambit."
