NEW YORK, NY (01/21/2025) (readMedia)-- Following reporting that Mayor Eric Adams attended President Trump's inauguration and used taxpayer money to meet Trump in Florida and that Governor Kathy Hochul ordered flags to be flown at full staff for President Trump, Common Cause/NY issued the following statement urging elected officials to put the interests of New Yorkers over their own political objectives:
On Mayor Adams:
"The Mayor is shamefully putting his legal issues ahead of the people he's supposed to represent - and using our tax dollars to do it. Mayor Adams has an obligation to enforce and uphold New York City's laws, not bend the knee to President Trump in the hopes of currying favor for a pardon. The Mayor should be standing up for the people he was elected to represent, and putting the interests of everyday New Yorkers threatened by newly announced federal policies first."
On Governor Hochul:
"Raising the flag for a President who spits at the democratic rule of law is advanced obedience to authoritarianism and beneath the dignity of the Governor of the State of New York. Other governors in large, complex states with big cities, like Jay Pritzker of Illinois, have shown they're capable of standing up to the expected lawlessness of a second Trump administration. Common Cause/NY urges Governor Hochul not to pre-emptively sacrifice our American values in service to Trump's ego. She can and must be better than that."
