Common Cause/NY Statement on "Pathetic" End of Legislative Session

NEW YORK, NY (06/22/2017) (readMedia)-- Last night the legislative session concluded for the year without addressing many important policy issues. In response, Common Cause/NY Executive Director Susan Lerner issued the following statement:

"New Yorkers woke up this morning to the news that their representatives in Albany have skipped town while neglecting to pass any kind of election or ethics reform, or simply renew Mayoral control of schools-three policies that have overwhelming public support. Meanwhile, lawmakers found time to bicker about renaming the Tappan-Zee Bridge but couldn't even hold a hearing on early voting or agree to clean up our corrupt procurement process.

It is a prime example of how putting personal political advantage above the interests of everyday New Yorkers has perverted the normal policy making process.

This is a pathetic excuse for governing and an insult to the millions of New Yorkers who expect a basic level of competency."
