Community Care Physicians Helping Fight Obesity

LATHAM, NY (04/17/2007)(readMedia)-- Community Care Physicians and Clifton Park Pediatrics invite you and your family to a free health program on April 20th from 5:30-7pm at the Southern Saratoga YMCA, 1 Wall Street, Clifton Park. FIT KIDS is a free program for children 6 years and up to promote healthy eating and exercise. Today we are seeing more and more children who are not physically active and who have poor eating habits. As a result of this, there is a growing number of children who are being diagnosed with diabetes and becoming obese. This family oriented program encourages kids to have fun while they exercise regularly so they can stay healthy both mentally and physically. This is a free event for families to promote a healthy lifestyle and to make healthy food choices at an early age For more information on this event please call or 371-5437.

Today childhood obesity is becoming one of the fastest growing health problems in our country. According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), in 2002, 31.5% of children ages 6-19 were overweight and 16.5% were seriously overweight or obese. Obesity has an immediate impact on children's health both mentally and physically. The AACE also states that "Overweight children have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. This increases to 80% if one or more parents are also overweight or obese."

Childhood obesity can be prevented by healthy eating and exercise. This lifestyle begins with the whole family. Dr. Mitta, a Board Certified Pediatrician who practices with Clifton Park Pediatrics, feels very strongly about this cause. Her staff will be on hand to encourage children to become physically active, make the right eating and provide nutritional information for the whole family.
