POTSDAM, NY (08/27/2012)(readMedia)-- The Community Performance Series will open its 2012-13 Guest Artist Series with Doc Severinsen and the San Miguel 5 on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. Tickets are now on sale and are selling fast.
"Doc Severinsen's musical resume is one like no other. We are so excited to have him and his talented friends from the San Miguel 5 join us this season. Their repertoire spans jazz, Latin and some incredibly memorable movie music and TV themes," said Meg Watson, CPS marketing and education coordinator. "We are anticipating an exciting audience, as the concert falls during SUNY Potsdam's Family Weekend and we are urging community members to get their tickets early. A truly seasoned musician, Doc will provide our audience with the most vibrant and energetic program you may ever see -- and we're not just talking about his fantastic wardrobe!"
Community members may recognize the name of this artist from the sound of late night television. As the bandleader for "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson," Doc Severinsen ruled the world of late night TV music for 30 years. After the end of the Johnny Carson show, Doc wasn't ready to put down his horn and embarked on a tour with his Big Band. Audiences were finally able to hear the breadth of talent that Doc, his horn and his band members really possessed.
A Grammy Award winner, Doc has recorded over 30 albums in multiple genres over the years. A fan of traveling, Doc has performed with artists such as Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, the Charlie Barnett Band, Ed Shaughnessy, Ernie Watts, Snooky Young, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Skitch Henderson, among others.
Now into his eighties, the seasoned musician still has not retired his trumpet and continues to produce vibrant and exciting programs on tour with his new group, the San Miguel 5. Known best for their incredible jazz and Latin fusion, Doc Severinsen and the San Miguel 5 will present a program that will be both entertaining aurally and visually. A colorful cast, Doc and his musicians will woo audiences with their incredible musicality and vibrant outfits.
