Congresswoman Louise Slaughter Talks Interfaith to Hundreds of High Schools Students at Nazareth College
ROCHESTER, NY (03/08/2012)(readMedia)-- More than 430 high school students, 100 teachers, and 50 presenters from all over the Rochester area and beyond are arriving at Nazareth on Tuesday morning for a second annual student-led conference titled Global Citizenship: Next Generation Living Together in a Pluralistic World. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-28) will give the keynote address to the students, speaking on interfaith dialogue and youth. Sponsored by The Brian and Jean Hickey Center for Interfaith Studies and Dialogue at Nazareth College, the conference hopes to make students aware of diversity of cultural and religious traditions and beliefs systems that exist and how they shape people's lives, along with being more aware of healthy ways of responding to conflict in order to better promote understanding. Students will discuss topics such as nonviolence and peacemaking, etiquette in school, the workplace and beyond, recognizing and responding to religious intolerance in the media and popular culture, and pluralism in America and principles of dialogue. The Nawal Foundation, a non-profit organization from Washington, D.C. dedicated to opposing all violence in the name of Islam, is also participating in the Conference. There will also be a special certificate session for teachers entitled Understanding World Religions and Cultures for Teachers held during the Conference.
