Construction Begins On NY Works Project To Repair Greater Rochester Roads

ALBANY, NY (07/11/2012)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced that construction has begun on a $7.7 million contract to resurface five segments of state roads in Livingston and Ontario counties through Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's NY Works program.

"Governor Cuomo's NY Works program speeds up our bridge and highway reconstruction efforts and puts people back to work," Commissioner McDonald said "The traveling public will see nearly twice as much highway work than just last year. We ask motorists to be patient and drive carefully through construction zones."

With today's announcement, construction has begun on the first NY Works transportation improvement projects only three months after Governor Cuomo signed the 2012-2013 Budget allowing funding for these projects to move forward.

NY Works focuses on improving pavement that is in fair condition to good. This preventive maintenance work will better preserve the state's infrastructure and guard against the need for more costly, in-depth construction. Bundling projects sites within close geographic locations into a single contract enables DOT to lower expenses and obtain lower bids.

The construction contractor for this project, Sealand Contractors Corp., of Rush, Monroe County, will begin work next week on two sections of Route 21 in the town of Naples, Ontario County. The southern section, between the Steuben County line and the south Naples village line is set to begin with pavement repairs on July 2. The northern section, between the Naples village line and Griesha Hill Road is set to begin with pavement repairs on July 5.

Below is a list of additional roads that will be resurfaced this summer as part of this NY Works contract. Schedules are subject to change based on weather or other events.

• Route 20A from Route 15A in the town of Richmond, Ontario County to Route 64 in the town of Bristol, Livingston County. Pavement repairs are expected to begin the week of July 16 and paving is planned to be complete in early October.

• Route 15A from Lawrence Hill Road in the town of Livonia to Route 20A in the town of Canadice in Livingston County. Pavement repairs are expected to begin the week of July 27 and paving is planned to be complete in mid-October.

• Route 256 from County Route 71 in the town of Groveland to Sliker Hill Road in the town of Sparta, Livingston County. Pavement repairs are expected to begin the week of July 30 and paving is planned to be complete in early November.

The pavement at all locations will be resurfaced. Once work is complete, crews will install centerline rumble strips, located along the pavement markings dividing opposite-direction travel lanes. Centerline rumble strips are a low-cost measure designed to reduce dangerous head-on and opposite-direction sideswipe crashes.

Traffic at each work site will be controlled with lane closures and flaggers on week days during the daytime hours. It is imperative that motorists remember this season to drive carefully through the many highway and bridge construction zones.
