SAVANNAH, GA (05/23/2013)(readMedia)-- Salem High School graduate and SCAD B.F.A. advertising student Paige Cano, recently won first place at the annual Sand Arts Festival held on Tybee Island's North Beach. Cano won in the "SCAD Spirit" category.

The imaginative creation, built by Cano, Amanda Bullen, Bruce Sampson, and Grant Whitsitt, features a tiered beehive complete with a textured hexagonal honeycomb pattern in celebration of Art the Bee, the SCAD mascot.

"I've always been encouraged to use my imagination," Cano said of the achievement and her inspiration. "This definitely lead me to SCAD, because I knew my decision would be wholly supported and creative thinking was something I needed in building my career."

The competition showcases students' talents by inviting them to design and build inventive, eye-catching sand sculptures in a variety of categories. Students representing all schools and disciplines competed for a $5,000 in prizes.

Originating in the early 1990s as a field trip for foundation studies classes, the SCAD Sand Arts Festival has evolved into the perfect 3-D sculptural complement to the Sidewalk Arts Festival held in Forsyth Park each April. Visit scad.edu/sandarts for full event details and competition rules.
