POTSDAM, NY (09/01/2011)(readMedia)-- Masterful trumpeter John Ellis, a professor at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, will open the 2011-12 Faculty Recital Series alongside accompanist Dave Heinick in an upcoming concert.

Dr. Ellis and Dr. Heinick will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7 in Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

Also accompanying Ellis will be James Madeja on trumpet, James Petercsak on percussion and John Geggie on bass. All three are also Crane School of Music faculty members.

The program consists of a wide variety of arrangements. From classic trumpet repertoire by Johann Friedrich Fasch, to the jazzy "Toot Suite for Trumpet and Jazz Piano," to three 21st-century trumpet arrangements, Ellis will showcase his breadth of style and repertoire.

"A Harrier's Odyssey," composed by Crane's own Paul Steinberg, is sure to be one of the highlights of the program. Another piece, "Aftershock: A Response to 9/11," by Eric Ewazen, will remember the tragedy that happened 10 years to the week before this performance.

The concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.
