DOT Announces New Location for Public Hearing on Fonda Crossings

May 23 Hearing to Focus on Closure Proposals for Broadway and Center Street Crossings

ALBANY, NY (05/07/2012)(readMedia)-- The New York State Department of Transportation has announced that the location has been changed for a public hearing on Wednesday, May 23, beginning at 9 a.m. in Fonda, Montgomery County. The public hearing regards a request by CSX Transportation, Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla., (Case 38491 and 38492) to discontinue and close the Broadway Street and Center Street public railroad grade crossings located in the Village of Fonda and to divert traffic to the Bridge Street (NYS Route 30A) highway overpass. The meeting location was changed in order to accommodate a large turnout.

The public hearing will be held before New York State Department of Transportation Acting Chief Administrative Law Judge Robert A. Rybak at the Fonda-Fultonville Central School Auditorium, 112 Old Johnstown Road, Fonda, New York 12068.

The hearing will establish a record and enable a determination as to whether the discontinuance and closure or partial closure of these two at-grade crossings are in the public interest. This is the second hearing that will be held about this proposal.

CSX Transportation, Inc. on Dec. 12, 2011, requested that the two public at-grade crossings located in the Village of Fonda on Broadway Street and Center Street be discontinued and closed. The New York State Department of Transportation is proposing that the Broadway Street crossing be closed to vehicles, but remain open for pedestrians and use by vehicles in emergency situations. The Center Street crossing would be closed to all traffic. Details of the proposal, such as maintenance responsibilities, what notifications would occur in an emergency and what procedures would be followed for emergency use of the crossing, will be discussed at the hearing.

Please contact NYSDOT's Office of Proceedings (518-457-1182) if a sign language interpreter, an assistive listening system or any other accommodations will be required to facilitate participation in this hearing.
