Dallas native's artwork selected for cover of New York Times

SAVANNAH, GA (04/18/2012)(readMedia)-- Savannah, GA – The New York Times will use Dallas native Heather Carter's artwork for its annual Summer Movie preview issue which runs May 6. 

"This is my first time collaborating with an art director, signing a contract and sticking to a deadline for publication," said Carter, an illustration design student at the Savannah College of Art and Design. "This opportunity means some 'real world' experience and hopefully an open door to more illustration assignments."

Carter's design was chosen through an online vote on the Times' website. Hers was one of nine SCAD illustration student designs competing for this assignment.

She describes her illustration as "a mason jar in the grass, ready to capture some old-fashioned movie projectors whizzing through the night sky like fireflies." Her inspiration was summer nights, "perfect for catching fireflies and watching movies."

Professors Julie Lieberman, Kurt Vargo, Linda Warner and John Foerster art directed close to 160 SCAD student submissions. Times editors narrowed the field down to 10 finalists, which were then posted on the Times website. Visitors to the site were encouraged to vote on their favorite and offer a brief comment about why they made their choice.
