Damage to the Eastern Erie Canal

Statement of Canal Director Brian U. Stratton

Brian U. Stratton, director of the New York State Canal Corporation, today issued this statement:

"The Canal Corporation hopes to announce within a few days whether the eastern Erie Canal can re-open this navigation season. Not until the waters recede more can we assess the true extent of damages to Canal facilities and more accurately estimate when the Canal will re-open. The regular navigation season is scheduled to end Nov. 15."
