Delavan Soldier inducted into U of I Hall of Fame

URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, IL (11/14/2013)(readMedia)-- Col. Fred W. Allen of Delavan, was inducted into the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Hall of Fame, Oct. 25.
Allen graduated from UIUC in 1987 with a degree in agriculture mechanization.
June 1987 he commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Illinois Army National Guard. In 2004 Allen deployed to Iraq as commander of 1-106th Assault Helicopter Battalion. After returning from Iraq, he attended the U.S. Army War College, receiving a master's degree in strategic studies, and was selected as the Illinois Army National Guard's chief of staff.
May 2011 he deployed to Afghanistan as the commander of the 1-14th Agricultural Development Team in the Kunar province. He is now the officer-in-charge of the Illinois Army National Guard CH-47 and Shadow Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Flight Facility in Peoria, Ill.
