NEW ROCHELLE, NY (06/21/2011)(readMedia)-- Dr. Margaret Badum Melady of Washington, D.C., a graduate of The College of New Rochelle (CNR) Class of 1961, was awarded the Women of Achievement Award at the College's 73rd Annual Alumnae/i College Weekend in June. The award was instituted in 1999 to recognize alumnae/i for brilliant accomplishments in their chosen careers. Dr. Stephen J. Sweeny, president of the College, presented the award.
Following her undergraduate career, Margaret Melady earned a master's degree from Seton Hall University as well as a doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. She has published books on social and political issues, international culture and communications, and is the author of Pope John Paul II: The Pastoral Visit as a New Vocabulary of the Sacred, published in 1999.
Ms Melady has held executive positions in communications and governmental affairs and served on the faculties of St. Joseph's University, Sacred Heart University and the State University of New York at Oswego. She was appointed President of the American University of Rome in 1997, serving in that role for six years, and while there was Chair of the Marymount International School Board of Regents. She is invested in the Order of St. Gregory the Great and received the National Media Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
Currently, Margaret serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Catholic Distance University, is a member of the Board of Overseers of the School of Diplomacy at Seton Hall University and lectures at Dubrovnik International University in Croatia.
The first Catholic college for women in New York State, The College of New Rochelle was founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Order.
