East Peoria Soldier awarded Legion of Merit
Wilfinger enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard in 1982 as an infantry Soldier with Company B, 1st Battalion, 123rd Infantry Regiment, then located in Delavan, Illinois. He went on to serve more than 32 years, including 30 as an Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Soldier, until his retirement in February 2015. Wilfinger's last assignment was as the operations sergeant major for the Springfield-based 65th Troop Command Brigade.
Wilfinger's award citation stated he "distinguished himself by exceptional duty performance, powerful leadership, creative problem solving and demonstrating extraordinary talents" and "his performance immeasurably helped improve the Illinois National Guard."
Wilfinger's previous awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
Created in 1942, the Legion of Merit is the fourth highest honor for members of the U.S. Armed Forces and it recognizes exceptional meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.
