ALBANY, NY (06/30/2011)(readMedia)-- In response to the demand for teacher training in personal finance and innovative instruction , The New York Credit Union Foundation is holding Financial Education Summer Training (FEST) Wednesday, Aug. 3, at the Holiday Inn on Wolf Road in Albany, N.Y.

The training offers beginner and advanced tracks utilizing NEFE's (National Endowment for Financial Education®) award-winning High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP®), a non-commercial, flexible personal finance curriculum for high school students, as well as the opportunity to network with educators and resource providers.

Internationally known personal finance journalist, author and TV personality Farnoosh Torabi will share strategies for defining wealth, developing a stronger relationship with money and making smarter financial choices in her keynote presentation. She will also prepare attendees how to incorporate these winning strategies into their own lives while passing them on to the youth they educate.

FEST, which runs from 8:30 a.m. until 3:45 p.m., is coordinated by the Foundation and Cornell University Cooperative Extension. It costs $25 per person and includes breakfast, lunch and all course material.

Featured speakers and session leaders in addition to Torabi include: Susan Sharkey, the new executive director of NEFE HSFPP (What's Next for the HSFPP); Dr. Karen Gross, president of Southern Vermont College (How Financial Literacy Gets Students College and Career Ready); Barbara Henza, Cornell University Cooperative Extension; and Educational Consultant Susan Gubing.

FEST is beneficial for and open to:

  • teachers (e.g., business, social studies, economics, family/consumer sciences and math);
  • guidance counselors;
  • home-school educators;
  • credit union employees and volunteers; cooperative extension educators;
  • financial counselors and youth practitioners from community-based organizations, religious groups and state agencies.

About NEFE HSFPP: The program focuses on competency-based learning, providing students with the tools they need to apply financial skills in their own lives such as; creating a personal budget, proposing a personal saving and investing plan, selecting strategies to use in handling credit and managing debt, and examining the impact of career and lifestyle choices on their financial plan. Attendees will receive instruction on how to order the free teaching materials, as well as in-depth guidance on how to effectively utilize the materials with their students.
