Electric Rates Going Down for National Grid Customers in New Hampshire

WALTHAM, MA (03/20/2012)(readMedia)-- For the second time in less than a week, National Grid is proposing to lower energy costs for its New Hampshire customers. The company is asking the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission for permission to lower residential electricity rates by a net 13.4 percent starting May 1. Last week the company filed a request for a net 17 percent reduction in natural gas rates, which also will take effect on May 1. The company is passing on the lower costs it pays for electricity purchased for its customers. Electric commodity rates will decline by 24 percent. Commodity rates make-up approximately 48 percent of a residential customer's bill. The remainder covers the costs incurred to deliver the electricity to the customer.

"Most of the electricity used in New Hampshire is generated by natural gas and natural gas prices have continued to fall," said Timothy F. Horan, president of National Grid in New Hampshire. "We're very happy to be able to announce for the second time in a week that we can pass these savings along to our customers who are working so hard to control costs."

A typical National Grid residential customer using 500 kilowatt hours of electricity each month will see their monthly bill decline by approximately $9.31, from $69.84 to $60.33 based on the proposed rates that will run through October of this year.

Last week National Grid asked the PUC to reduce natural gas rates by 17 percent for the off-peak season running from May 1 until November 1. That translates into a monthly savings of approximately $12 for the typical National Grid natural gas customer in New Hampshire.
