SAVANNAH, GA (05/23/2013)(readMedia)-- York Community High School graduate and SCAD B.F.A. interior design student Amanda Bullen, recently won first place at the annual Sand Arts Festival held on Tybee Island's North Beach. Bullen won top honors in the "SCAD Spirit" category.

The imaginative creation, built by Bullen, Paige Cano, Bruce Sampson, and Grant Whitsitt, features a tiered beehive complete with a textured hexagonal honeycomb pattern in celebration of Art the Bee, the SCAD mascot.

"Ever since I was little I was always drawing, painting, or building," Bullen said. "I knew that I wanted to surround myself with people who have a passion to create."

The competition showcases students' talents by inviting them to design and build inventive, eye-catching sand sculptures in a variety of categories. Students representing all schools and disciplines competed for a $5,000 in prizes.

Originating in the early 1990s as a field trip for foundation studies classes, the SCAD Sand Arts Festival has evolved into the perfect 3-D sculptural complement to the Sidewalk Arts Festival held in Forsyth Park each April. Visit scad.edu/sandarts for full event details and competition rules.
