HOBBS, NM (11/22/2010)(readMedia)-- The Daniels Fund recently granted University of the Southwest $25,000 to fund the College Compass Program, a project which brings high school-aged students onto campus for a full college experience.

Bill Daniels, a pioneer in cable television known for his kindness and generosity to those in need, established the Daniels Fund (www.danielsfund.org) to provide grants and scholarships in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The Daniels Fund Youth Development Grants are directed towards youth programs focusing on academic and supplemental services, civic literary and community engagement.

University of the Southwest is using the funds to sponsor a fall Test Drive, which was held Nov. 12-13 and a spring Mustang Stampede. During these two events, high school seniors stay overnight in campus residence halls, eat in the college's cafeteria, experience sporting and community events, and obtain vital information to make the transition to college.

Emilio Sandoval of Olton, Texas, and Matthew Vargas of Albuquerque, NM, each were selected for a $500 scholarship during their visit.

Curriculum for the Compass Program includes: "Finding the Fit: Selecting the College That's Right for You," "Making the Adjustment: Tips for a Smooth Transition to College," "Financial Literacy: Understanding Financial Planning & Management," and "Matching Your Major with Your Career." These programs are lead by Enrollment Services, the Student Success Coordinator, and Financial Aid.

"We greatly appreciate the support that the Daniels Fund has provided for the College Compass Program," said Brad Moser, vice president for enrollment services. "This program will help educate high school students about understanding the college selection process and choosing their options for the future."

USW also is a recipient of The Daniels Opportunity Scholarships which seeks to provide scholarship funding for non-traditional students pursuing higher education. The Daniels Fund has contributed $105,600 since 2004 for the Daniels Opportunity Scholarships and most recently it contributed $25,000 for the next two years. These scholarships are given to non-traditional students, such as adults entering or returning to college; students from alternative schools, juvenile justice facilities and youth offender programs; GED recipients; former foster care youth; returning military and emergency service providers.
