Emma Willard School Welcomes New Scholarship Students

TROY, NY (08/21/2008)(readMedia)-- On September 2, Emma Willard School will welcome nine new students as part of the Davis Scholars Program. The program, funded by the Shelby Cullom Davis family, will provide an empowering education to talented and motivated girls from across the globe. Students hail from Bolivia, Botswana, Croatia, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam as well as the United States. As the leading educator of young women, Emma Willard School has a long tradition of educating a diverse group of women of merit, and the school shares the Davis family’s commitment to building cross-cultural understanding.

Of the five boarding schools selected to participate in the Davis program, Emma Willard is the only school devoted exclusively to the education of girls. “We are thrilled that Gale Lansing Davis, a member of the Class of 1963, and her family have chosen to include her alma mater in this extraordinary program,” says Head of School Trudy Hall. “Their generosity supports our mission to provide the finest educational opportunities to the best and brightest young women, regardless of their means, as we prepare them to serve and shape their world.”

In supporting highly motivated, high potential students from around the world, the Davis family hopes to create a cadre of future leaders, Americans and non-Americans alike, ensuring a network that will be constructive and beneficial for all. Hall says, “As our world becomes smaller and yet increasingly complex, initiatives like the Davis Scholars Program will make a demonstrable difference in levels of awareness, tolerance, and sensitivity among young people worldwide.”

Each scholarship recipient will have her full need met by grants from the Davis family and from Emma Willard School. Upon graduation from Emma Willard, Davis Scholars are eligible for continued support at any of the 89 Davis United World Scholars colleges and universities, which now support more than 1,400 students from 126 countries.

Emma Willard School is the nation’s leading college preparatory boarding and day school for young women grades 9–12. The Davis Scholars Program is part of a larger financial aid program offered by the school.
