ALBANY, NY (11/28/2022) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law the nation's first statewide moratorium on cryptomining. Grassroots environmental advocates - with a coalition of elected officials, small business owners, and winemakers - successfully beat back millions of dollars in lobbying from the crypto industry, for an historic climate victory.
Advocates and Assemblymember Anna Kelles, the lead sponsor of the bill, will celebrate this win, ask the Governor to finish the job by shutting down existing cryptomines Greenidge Generation and Fortistar North Tonawanda, and take questions from the press.
The law (A.7389-C Kelles/S.6486-D Parker) will establish a two-year moratorium on new and renewed permits for proof-of-work cryptomining operations housed at fossil fuel-burning power plants. It will also require the Department of Environmental Conservation to perform a full environmental impact assessment in a year's time on cryptomining operations and how they affect New York's ability to meet the climate goals mandated in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
