Environmental and Local Govt Officials to Release New Analysis of Taxpayer Savings w/ Packaging Reduction Act

The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act Is Now on the Assembly Floor After Passing All Assembly Committees Last Year; Groups Will Call On Assembly Speaker to Bring Bill Up for a Vote

ALBANY, NY (01/14/2026) (readMedia)-- Environmental and local government officials will hold a news conference on Zoom to release new data showing more than 400 million dollars in taxpayer savings in communities across New York with the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (PRRIA - A1749 Glick/S1464 Harckham).

PRRIA continues to be one of the top bills to watch in Albany. It passed in the state Senate in 2024 and 2025; and after passing through four Assembly committees in 2025, it is now on the Assembly floor, with 75 sponsors.

PRRIA will reduce plastic packaging by 30% incrementally over 12 years, as well as phase out 17 of the most toxic chemicals and materials used in packaging, including PFAS, heavy metals, and phthalates. It will also make polluters pay by establishing a modest fee on packaging paid by businesses, such as McDonald's and Amazon, generating new revenue for local governments and saving tax dollars from avoiding the cost of burying and burning waste.
