Enviros Call for NYS Climate Change Legislation As Federal Energy Debate Stalls, Oil Continues to Spill

Citizens to Assemble Outside Senate Chamber, Urge Senators to Vote for Global Warming Legislation Now

ALBANY, NY (06/23/2010)(readMedia)-- Tomorrow morning, dozens of environmental advocates representing environmental, conservation and civic groups will assemble outside the Senate Chamber to call for a vote on the Global Warming Pollution Control Act (S.4315-C). The legislation sets greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets at 80 percent below 1990 levels by the year 2050 and currently has 31 Senate sponsors.

Environmental Advocates of New York, New York Public Interest Research Group and other environmental, conservation and civic organizations.
WHAT:

In light of the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and lack of federal action on climate change, the time set greenhouse gas emissions limits for New York State is now. Passing the Global Warming Pollution Control Act would position New York on the forefront of the new energy economy and secure its place as a leader on climate change.

A similar version of the bill passed the State Assembly in April and has 31 sponsors in Senate. With the end of scheduled session come and gone, time is running out to take real steps to cut the pollution that is changing our climate.
