NEW ROCHELLE, NY (06/21/2011)(readMedia)-- Ethel Shafter, of New Canaan, CT, a graduate of The College of New Rochelle (CNR) Class of 1956, was awarded the Angela Merici Medal at CNR's 73rd Annual Alumnae/i College Weekend in June. The Angela Merici Medal, the highest alumnae/i award given by the College, was presented by Dr. Stephen J. Sweeny, president of the College.
The Angela Merici Medal is bestowed upon outstanding alumnae/i for their exceptional loyalty to the church and to the College as well as for distinctive achievement in their careers. The Medal was created to mark the 50th Anniversary of the College. Since that time, more than one hundred CNR alumnae/i have received this distinguished award.
The first Catholic college for women in New York State, The College of New Rochelle was founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Order. Today, it comprises the all-women School of Arts & Sciences, and three schools which admit women and men: the School of New Resources (for adult learners), the School of Nursing and the Graduate School.
