LONDONDERRY, N.H. (10/23/2012)(readMedia)-- When it comes to hybrid-only nameplates, the Toyota Prius has largely remained unchallenged in sales since its U.S. debut more than a decade ago, but the launch of Ford's new gas-electric C-MAX line could change that. Last month, the American automaker began shipping its 47-mpg C-MAX Hybrid, which tops the Prius v by five miles per gallon in combined fuel economy. Now, Ford has announced that its upcoming C-MAX Energi will be the most fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid on the market.
Slated to arrive at Ford dealerships in November, the C-MAX Energi is rated at 100 MPGe in combined city and highway driving, besting the Toyota Prius Plug-in by the equivalent of five miles per gallon. That rating even tops the Chevy Volt in all-electric mode by the equivalent of two miles per gallon, and the EPA estimates that the C-MAX Energi could save its owners nearly $7,000 in gas costs over five years compared to the average new vehicle.
"Toyota may have been a hybrid leader last decade, but Ford is really pushing the boundaries of what the technology can do now, just as consumers gain more interest with unstable gas prices," said Jim McGovern, general manager of Ford of Londonderry, a New Hampshire Ford dealer. "The C-MAX Energi is packed with innovative technology that conserves as much as energy as possible without diluting the vehicle's personality."
In addition to using an advanced lithium-ion battery for weight and space savings, the 2013 Ford C-MAX Energi features regenerative braking to capture and reuse more than 95 percent of energy that is usually wasted during deceleration. Drivers can choose between optimum efficiency and performance with the EV mode button, which can be set to all-electric, hybrid or gas-only configurations. Meanwhile, the SmartGauge with EcoGuide feature can further improve efficiency by affecting driver behavior, using customizable fuel-economy displays and coaching functions.
The engineers of the Ford C-MAX Energi have also developed intuitive technology to make the charging process easier, incorporating an LED ring around the charging port that illuminates when the battery is replenished. Starting early next year, the MyFord Mobile app will allow owners to remotely monitor their vehicle's charge and range on their smartphone, as well as locate the nearest charging stations.
While efficiency is a major advantage of the C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid, other available tech features create an equal emphasis on comfort, convenience and safety. Buyers that opt for the SYNC with MyFord Touch infotainment system can keep their hands on the wheel with voice-activated phone calls, music selections and navigation, while the available rain-sensing windshield wipers automatically turn on when it starts to rain or snow. For city dwellers, the optional active park assist takes the guesswork out of tight parallel parking.
"The C-MAX is more than just Ford's first pure hybrid nameplate; it is a vehicle designed to make your life easier, whether that means spending less on gas or staying safely connected on the road," added McGovern. "At the same time, buyers get a stylish and responsive ride that fits their active lifestyle."
