Ford to Feature SYNC as Standard on 2013 Fusion, Flex

Ford of Londonderry Offers Free Training on the Hands-Free In-Car Technology

LONDONDERRY, N.H. (02/27/2012)(readMedia)-- Drivers today are more connected through their cell phones than ever before, even with a plethora of laws in place restricting handheld phone use behind the wheel. Ford is ensuring that more of those drivers will be able to stay connected safely by making SYNC, its hands-free mobile-connectivity system, standard on all 2013 Ford Fusion and Flex models when they go on sale later this year.

Ford's SYNC, currently available either standard or as an option on all new models available at Ford dealerships, is a voice-activated system that connects with a driver's smartphone. The system can make phone calls, read text messages aloud and deliver traffic alerts, all in response to voice commands. SYNC is compatible with the automaker's available MyFord Touch infotainment system, which integrates SYNC voice commands with touchscreen usability.

"As higher-grade technology becomes standard on more models, it's only natural for the average driver to have more questions about it," said Jim McGovern, general manager of Ford of Londonderry, a New Hampshire Ford dealer. "Even though a lot of its features are intuitive, there is a learning curve for SYNC, both with and without MyFord Touch. Our training sessions are designed to get more people as fluent in the technology as possible so they can take advantage of every feature."

Ford of Londonderry offers on-site personalized training sessions to SYNC and MyFord Touch users. The sessions go over a number of SYNC's functions, like how to make hands-free phone calls, locate nearby restaurants and get turn-by-turn directions. Staff members are also on hand to answer any questions that Ford owners may have. Users can sign up for the free training sessions at http://www.fordoflondonderry.com/sign-up-for-sync-lessons-today!.aspx, and they are encouraged to note specific features and functions they would like to go over.

Even without the aid of a training session, the MyFord Touch system is expected to become easier to use this spring following a software upgrade. The no-charge upgrade will feature simpler graphics, a streamlined interface, faster touch-screen response times and tablet support. Navigation maps and voice recognition will also reportedly be improved.

Ford will mail a USB drive containing the upgrade to current MyFord Touch owners later this year. Owners will then be able to upgrade the system at their convenience, plugging the drive into the MyFord Touch Media Hub's USB port to begin automatic installation. Customers may also have an authorized Ford dealer perform the upgrade for them.

"Ford wants everything about SYNC and MyFord Touch to be intuitive, because there's no point in offering technology if it's not going to make life easier," added McGovern. "When the MyFord Touch upgrade arrives, the easier and faster system will allow drivers to eliminate most distractions and focus on what's really important: driving."
