TROY, NY (09/12/2008)(readMedia)--

How do young women use the power of their intellect and the energy of their passion to make positive change in today’s world?

On September 27, Emma Willard School will host a symposium, “Women, Power, and Possibility,” that will explore this question. The symposium, the second in a series, will consist of a panel of young women already making their mark around the globe. They will examine the issues and contemplate the many possibilities that emerge when women translate their beliefs into action with commitment and conviction.

Lindsay Hyde, founder of Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG), will serve on the panel. The mission of Strong Women, Strong Girls is to build upon the lessons learned from strong women throughout history to help girls and young women become strong women themselves. By building communities of women committed to supporting positive social change, Strong Women, Strong Girls works to create cycles of mutual empowerment for women and girls. Strong Women, Strong Girls has created an innovative after school model that uses the study of contemporary and historic female role models, mentoring relationships with college undergraduate women, and skill building activities to help at-risk girls in grades 3–5 build positive self-esteem and skills for life-long success.

Lindsay Hyde founded SWSG during her freshman year in college. In 2004, she incorporated SWSG as a not-for-profit agency and began serving as the executive director. SWSG engages over 400 at-risk girls annually in Boston, MA, and Pittsburgh, PA. Learn more at www.swsg.org.
