SAVANNAH, GA (05/28/2013)(readMedia)-- Franklin County High School and SCAD B.F.A. Illustration alumni Chris Alfaro, recently won first place at the annual Sand Arts Festival held on Tybee Island's North Beach. Alfaro won top honors in the Sand Relief category.

Alfaro and teammates Chock Bun Lam, John Sutherland and Cory Brangman designed and built the imaginative creation. The group's stunning relief piece features realistic looking dinosaur bones emerging from the sand, reminding the viewer of a paleontological dig.

"I have always been fascinated by dinosaurs since I was a child," Alfaro said. "We figured with the space provided, we could create a piece that would be nearly life-size of a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton. "

The competition showcases students' talents by inviting them to design and build inventive, eye-catching sand sculptures in a variety of categories. Students representing all schools and disciplines competed for $5,000 in prizes.

Originating in the early 1990s as a field trip for foundation studies classes, the SCAD Sand Arts Festival has evolved into the perfect 3-D sculptural complement to the Sidewalk Arts Festival held in Forsyth Park each April. Visit scad.edu/sandarts for full event details and competition rules.
