BATAVIA, NY (10/25/2018) What: Frederick Douglass Performance at GCC
When: Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 7 p.m.
Where: Genesee Community College Batavia Campus ~ Room T102 Conable Technology Building
Who: All are invited and welcome!
Background: Genesee Community College's History Club has invited Frederick Douglass - in the form of accomplished performance poet and published author, Nathan M. Richardson - to GCC to share his story. On Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 7 p.m., in full nineteenth-century dress, Richardson will bring his Frederick Douglass Speaking Tour to room T102 in GCC's Conable Technology Building. This fun and unique event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
Richardson's visit compliments a 12 foot long traveling exhibit on display in GCC's Alfred C. O'Connell Library entitled: "Frederick Douglass from Slavery to Freedom: The Journey to New York City" which was developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The exhibition has been displayed at schools, museums, libraries and historic sites across the country and will be viewable at GCC from now till November 14, 2018. The exhibit is open to the public and GCC offers free parking and library admission.
Frederick Douglass escaped his enslavement in 1838 and became a civil rights champion for all Americans speaking out to fight the injustices of his time. Accompanying the library exhibition and timed perfectly with Richardson's impressionist performance, students of Genesee Community College are invited to participate in a dynamic essay writing contest. The contest requires students to write a 600-word essay that address either of two specific essay questions about social injustice in today's world. Details are posted in the exhibit library guide at https://guides.genesee.edu/douglass2018 and the deadline for submissions is Wednesday, November 14, 2018.
Funding for these events has been provided by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the Alfred C. O'Connell Library, GCC's student club WOKE, GCC's History Club and GCC's Campus Activities Board (CAB). Details about this and other events sponsored by GCC's Historical Horizons History Club are available at https://gcchistoricalhorizons.wordpress.com/.
Please note: the previously announced lecture by David A. Bell originally scheduled for November 7, 2018 has been cancelled.
