ALBANY, NY (04/18/2011)(readMedia)-- The New York Credit Union Foundation (www.nycuf.org) has been working in partnership with Cabot Creamery Cooperative (http://www.cabotcheese.coop/pages/growing_health_wealth/) to develop a unique health and wealth awareness kit for children (ages 6-10) and their families.

WHO:

Cabot Creamery and Credit Unions are working together to share cooperative values and best business models for growing health and wealth in communities with children and adults of all ages. 

WHAT:

Health & Wealth Fair – to launch the Growing Health & Wealth Program At this fair, a hands-on, fun way to connect grandparents/parents to their grandchildren/children, you will find:

• finance workshops led by local credit unions specific to ages 5-8, 9-12, 13-15 and adult;

• health workshops for all ages led by Cabot and WellTrail;

• free lunch; and

• free Growing Health & Wealth Kits for children ages 6-10 (kits include set of three saving, spending, sharing moneyboxes; dual Growing Health & Wealth activity book; financial goals poster and family guide);

• 12,000 kits will be distributed by Central New York credit unions.

Snack Attack: Making Calcium-Rich Choices

Presenter: Dana Murphy, Cabot Creamery

This interactive workshop will focus on the importance of calcium—and how to make healthy choices. Using clues, participants will identify calcium-rich foods and win fun prizes.

11:00 a.m. Wealth Workshops (Choose the one designed for you!) Rabbit Room

You Got a Puppy! (Ages 5–8)

Presenters: Omar Short, Terrell Poe, Ameen Buchanan & Artie Gilchrist

This workshop combines imagination with valuable money management lessons. Kids age 5–8 will be asked to imagine a scenario: They just got a puppy for their birthday, and their parents have asked them to care for the puppy all by themselves. They will be given $30 each month to take care of their new pet, so how should they spend it? Together, the kids will learn about needs versus wants and how to create a simple spending plan.

Catch on to Savings! (Ages 9–12) House Room

Presenter: Wendy Wheelock, ACMG Federal Credit Union

This workshop will help youth age 9-12 learn how to save for their future goals. They’ll practice budgeting, consider the consequences of poor financial choices and learn tips for responsible spending.

Good Debt, Bad Debt: Using Credit Wisely (Ages 13–15) Small Conference Room

Presenter: Jeffrey Hayes, AmeriCU Credit Union

Hey, teens: How much do you really know about credit? This fun, engaging workshop will review the advantages and disadvantages of using credit, giving teens the facts they need to be smarter consumers.

Credit Reports and Scores (Adults) Large Conference Room

Presenter: Thom Dellwo, Cooperative Federal CU (Syracuse)

This workshop will focus on the basics of credit scores. Adults will learn how their credit scores are determined, how to improve their scores and how credit unions can help along the way.

11:30am Health Workshop #2 (All ages) Youth Area

Making the Health & Wealth Connection

Presenter: Kelli LaPage, Well Trail Inc.

This presentation will highlight the importance of (and the relationship between) physical health and financial wealth. Participants will learn how starting good habits early in life can help produce health and wealth as you grow older.
