Freeport Woman Accused of Stealing $39,000 In Benefits
NEW YORK, NY (09/03/2009)(readMedia)-- A 37-year-old Freeport woman was arrested Aug. 26 after investigators learned that she improperly collected $39,000 in workers' compensation benefits while working as a dental assistant, the New York State Insurance Department reported.
The Suffolk County Economic Crimes Unit of the office of District Attorney Thomas J. Spota arrested Monica Martinez, of Guy Lombardo Ave. She is accused of working at dental offices in Long Beach and Roslyn while claiming that neck and back injuries she suffered at a previous job left her unable to work.
Martinez was charged with violating the state Workers' Compensation Law. She could be sentenced to up to four years in prison if she is convicted. A hearing will be held in Suffolk County Court.
Martinez was arrested after an investigation by Dennis Carmody of the Insurance Department's Frauds Bureau, and investigators from the New York State Insurance Fund and the office of the Inspector General of the Workers' Compensation Board.
