BATAVIA, NY (10/24/2018) At a special Rochester Institute of Technology Alumni Awards Reception on October 18, 2018 Genesee Community College's Professor of Tourism & Hospitality, Amy Slusser received the 2018 Dr. Richard Marecki Memorial Award.
Dr. Richard Marecki served in various capacities at RIT from 1982 until his untimely passing in 1999. He coordinated the travel program and developed a Master's Degree in Hospitality and Service Management. He served as the graduate chairperson for the hospitality and service management department and chaired the department's executive leader program. After his passing, the memorial award was established to recognize individuals who display a steadfast dedication and passion for RIT and education.
Nominated by RIT faculty and Alumni Society officers, Slusser was selected as the award recipient for continuously demonstrating her commitment to RIT and her passion for life-long learning. The award was presented to Slusser by Francis Domoy, owner of Domoy Farms in Elba, NY and Professor Emeritus at RIT. Domoy has been a mentor, advisor and colleague throughout Slusser's career and a driving force behind her success and her passion.
Slusser earned her Bachelor's Degree in Travel Management in 1997 and her Master's Degree in Service Management and Innovation in 2001 from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She also studied business management at Sheffield Hallum University in England as part of RIT's study abroad program and even taught for RIT at the campus in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Upon returning to the United States in 2003, Slusser joined Genesee Community College as a professor and program director for the Tourism and Hospitality Management program, which has significantly grown during her tenure. She received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2008, among other accolades in the industry.
