Garrett M. Smith
Mr. Smith's practice includes preparing and prosecuting patent applications, rendering legal opinions, and patent counselling. Mr. Smith previously served as law clerk at the firm, where he drafted patent applications and responses to trademark and patent office actions, conducted patent searches, and provided research and opinions to clients regarding the protection of their intellectual property. Before clerking with Hoffman Warnick LLC, Mr. Smith served as a law clerk at a New Hampshire intellectual property firm, where he drafted patent applications and responses to patent office actions. Additional experience includes co-inventing an innovative athletic cleat while attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and co-designing a product that was given to incoming students and sold in the school bookstore.
Mr. Smith's background includes a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering-Science, Technology & Society from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a J.D. from the University of New Hampshire School of Law. Mr. Smith is admitted to practice in the State of New York.
James M. Acheson Jr.
Mr. Acheson's practice involves preparing and prosecuting domestic and international patent applications in the electrical and mechanical arts. Prior to joining Hoffman Warnick, Mr. Acheson worked as an associate at the Washington, D.C. office of a national I.P. firm, as Special Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as a patent and antitrust litigator for a national firm, as In-House patent counsel for a start-up carbon nanotube-based semiconductor company and as a molecular biology/radiation oncology researcher at Harvard Medical School.
Mr. Acheson's background includes a B.S. from Reed College, a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tufts University, and J.D. from the University of New Hampshire School of Law.
Matthew J. Kinnier
Mr. Kinnier's practice involves preparing and prosecuting patent applications, patentability and infringement opinions, and analysis of patent portfolios. Prior to joining Hoffman Warnick, Mr. Kinnier previously worked with clients on matters in several technical disciplines including: mechanical systems and components; turbo machinery; alternative energies; energy storage systems; natural gas liquefaction processes; energy exploration and production; and rehabilitative systems. Before becoming an associate at Hoffman Warnick LLC, Mr. Kinnier worked as a contracted attorney for Shell Oil Company in Houston, Texas, where he prepared patent applications, prosecuted pending cases, and provided intellectual property support for several businesses within the company. Prior to becoming a contracted attorney, he was an intern at the United States Department of Energy's Offices of Science and General Counsel, where he aided in the negotiation and development of Agreements for Commercializing Technology ("ACT"), a technology transfer mechanism available at U.S. National Laboratories. Additional experience includes patent prosecution work with an independent patent attorney and inventor in New Hampshire, and a full-semester extern position at Orr & Reno, P.A., where Mr. Kinnier performed civil litigation work for several attorneys within the firm.
Mr. Kinnier's background includes a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Engineering & Management from Clarkson University and a J.D. from the University of New Hampshire School of Law. Mr. Kinnier is admitted to practice in the State of New York and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
