What: Presentation of a Pride Month program on “Gender Identity/Gender Expression-Human Respect and Civil Rights Behind the Words.” Q & A Discussion.

When: Thursday, June 7, 2007 – 8:15 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

Where: Unitarian Universalist Society of South Suffolk, 28 Brentwood Road, Bayshore, Long Island

Why: Donna Riley, Transgender Services Coordinator at Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), will discuss how and why Gender Identity / Gender Expression have become so important when crafting legislation. Topics include transgender rights in proposed legislation such as the NYS Dignity for All Students act (DASA), which would amend the NYS Education Law to prohibit harassment; the NYS Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), which adds the category of gender expression to other protected classes in NYS human rights laws; and the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would prohibit discrimination against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
